Our Approach

We Facilitate Safe Learning Spaces

Bradford Maroons are an independent non-profit voluntary organisation that was formed in 1995 from the Youth Outreach Initiative programme.
Our core objective is to provide youth and community development opportunities via sports related activities including basketball in a safe and friendly environment. Activities include coaching, skills development, organising competitions, vocational sports and related social education, promoting fitness & health awareness, and varied volunteering opportunities.
The name “Bradford Maroons” is a combination of the City’s name and colour, which has strong historical resonance with aspirations of the predominantly African Caribbean and other ethnic minority communities in the area. For brief periods the name changed to “Rookies” it then became “West Bowling” followed by “West Bowling Maroons Youth Basketball Club”. This appealed to a wider audience as opposed to “Maroons” which was seen to be to closely associated with just the African Caribbean community. However, with time, maturity and confidence, the club reverted to its original name Bradford Maroons.

— Our Mission

Engaging young people in the community from diverse backgrounds and walks of life in community projects that promote prosocial engagement. This can be through sports or any other activity offers that are secured by the organisation as exemplified by current and previous PROJECTS with the aim of tackling the attainment gap and reducing the number of young people who become NEET (not in education, employment or training)

— Our Vision

Every young person deserves to have a bright and opportunity rich future. We want to work with young people who are disadvantaged, or at risk of disadvantage, to enable them to participate and succeed in education and training, to improve their employability, reduce their likelihood of future offending and improve health and wellbeing.

— Our Story

Our story has always been a simple one; engaging, teaching, exciting and working toward participation. The charity has been openly looking to progress and support the community
